The link between poverty and premature death and disability has been long evident, but the definition of who is poor and the global distribution of the extremely poor are changing. Today there are fewer poor and fragile states and most of poor people live in stable, middle-income nations.

The prevalence of poverty is an important Freedom and Personal Health and Well-being Prosperity issue.
Poverty may be defined in several different ways, particularly by socioeconomic status (SES).
Socioeconomic status can be determined by a family's income level, education level and skill set, and occupational status. In spite of the differences in definition between poverty and socioeconomic status, researchers agree that there is a clear and established relationship between poverty, socioeconomic status, and Freedom and Personal Health and Well-being outcomes—including increased risk for disease and premature death.
Factors that can contribute to inequitable access to resources and opportunities which may result in poverty:

Residents of impoverished neighbourhoods or communities are at increased risk for:

In order to reduce socioeconomic inequality, it may also be important to address factors that are associated with the Freedom and Personal Health and Well-being Prosperity status of poor communities
